ANUPEHA (As original) is a state of deep contemplation or pondering.

Anu, literally means, small, atom, subtle.

Peha, means to look or observe.

There is no mention in the sutras of any procedure, method, or practice system of this meditation.

In uttaradhyan sutra 29th chapter there is an answer to the question on benefits of anupeha, which is as follows:

“In a deep contemplation (Anupeha) he loosens the firm hold which the seven kinds of karman has, except ayushka. He shortens their duration, when it was to be a long one.He mitigates their power when it was supposed to be intense,or reduces their sphere of action when it was supposed to be a wide one.(In fact what is meant is that karman vargana pudgal which was attached to many parts of the soul is restricted to fewer places by the influence of purity of contemplation). He may either acquire ayushya karman or not, but he no more accumulates karman which produce unpleasant feelings, and he quickly crosses the four fold samsara, which is without a beginning and end.”

Generally, Anupeha is confused with the twelve bhavanas or mental reflections,(ekatva etc.) plus the four,(Maitri etc.) or the four mentioned in the last chapter, last gathas of uttaradhyan sutra, which are, Kandarpa,Abhiyogiki, kibbisiyam, and Asuri.

One may or may not graduate from these bhavanas to anupeha, which is very different.

When one really does Anupeha, his whole life is affected. In such a deep observation, one comes upon several insights. Its a kind of revelation of truth and in the process, there is continous discarding of untruth. It is done without any motive, which results in a total change of attitude or thinking towards life itself. In fact there is a mutation taking place and may lead to pratyaksh gyan (That which is not based on senses and mind).

As there is no system or pattern of observation and being very subjective, and several factors coming into play in various permutations, combinations,(The five samavays) it is difficukt to explain the changed (Right) perspective (Which is samyak darshan) in ones daily living.
