“One does not become a sramana (monk) by tonsure nor a brahmana by repeating the syllable OM nor a muni by living in the jungle, nor a tapasvi (penancer) by wearing (clothes of) kusa grass and bark”. ”One becomes a sramana by equanimity, a brahmana by chastity, a muni by learning, a tapasvi by renounciation”. ”By one’s actions (karma) one becomes brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, or shudra”. 25th chapter uttaradhyan sutra.
